Statement of Need
In the past 12 months published papers in major medical journals have revealed that the success rate of cure with penicillin therapy of strep throat has declined steadily over the past decade, reaching 30-40%. Pharyngitis is one of the most common conditions encountered by family physicians. The 2000 National Ambulatory Medical Care Survey ranked acute pharyngitis in the top 20 reported primary diagnoses resulting in office visits.
