A note on this resource: This fact sheet is archived from an earlier edition of the AAP's ADHD clinician toolkit and reflects coding standards that are no longer in use — including ICD-9-CM diagnosis codes (retired in 2015) and pre-2021 evaluation and management billing rules. CPT codes and descriptions are © American Medical Association and are referenced here, not reproduced in full. Please do not use the codes in this document for current billing. For up-to-date ADHD coding guidance, consult the AAP's current coding resources or your practice's billing team.

ADHD Coding & Billing Fact Sheet (Archived Resource)

This fact sheet on ADHD coding and billing was originally developed by the American Academy of Pediatrics as part of the Caring for Children With ADHD clinician toolkit. We're keeping it available here as a historical reference for LA AAP members, but it's important to know upfront: the codes in this document are outdated and should not be used for current billing. The diagnosis codes are ICD-9-CM, a coding system retired nationwide in 2015 and replaced by ICD-10-CM. The evaluation and management (E/M) codes and consultation codes reflect billing rules that predate the AMA's 2021 overhaul of office visit coding.

For accurate, up-to-date ADHD coding guidance, please consult the AAP's current coding resources or your practice's billing/compliance team. The original PDF is available below for reference purposes only.
