The Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants and Children-better known as the WIC Program serves to safeguard the health of low-income women, infants, and children up to age 5 who are at nutritional risk by providing nutritious foods to supplement diets, information on health eating, and referrals to health care.

The Louisiana WIC Program has the opportunity and responsibility to positively influence and improve the nutrition status of this population. Although breastfeeding is at the forefront of optimal nutrition for infants, WIC does provide infant formula and is federally obligated to do so.

This communication is to make you aware that, effective January 1, 2018, the Louisiana WIC Program will commence providing Abbott Laboratories manufactured infant standard and alternate standard formula via the brand Similac. Abbott Laboratories was awarded the 3-year contract in August 2017. The current contract with Mead Johnson to provide Enfamil infant standard formula will end December 31, 2017.

Due to this change in WIC provided infant formulas, you may see an uptick in appointments as some formulas will require a basic prescription prior to dispensing. I have attached a copy of the training presentation for your edification. Additionally, your clinic/office will be receiving a supply of Alternate Standard prescription pads, from Abbott Laboratories, to assist in facilitating the transition from Enfamil to Similac products.

As always, if you have further concerns or questions, feel free to contact WIC at 225-342- 8064.
